Son oeuvre majeure, le Rational des divins offices, est la somme de toute la tradition du sens spirituel ou sens mystique de la liturgie. De m\u00eame que le commentaire traditionnel de l&rsquo;\u00c9criture recherchait, outre le sens litt\u00e9ral du texte, le sens spirituel (Jonas restant trois jours dans le ventre du poisson signifie mystiquement le Christ au tombeau), le commentaire de la liturgie mettait en lumi\u00e8re sa signification mystique (l&rsquo;encensoir et ses charbons ardents repr\u00e9sentent l&rsquo;humanit\u00e9 du Christ br\u00fblante de charit\u00e9). Sauf pour les sp\u00e9cialistes, le Rational de Durand de Mende est tomb\u00e9 dans un oubli total. La conception traditionnelle de la liturgie qu&rsquo;il repr\u00e9sentait, celle des P\u00e8res de l&rsquo;\u00c9glise et des M\u00e9di\u00e9vaux, a \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e9cart\u00e9e au profit d&rsquo;un commentaire purement historique. Mais aujourd&rsquo;hui, dans le domaine de l&rsquo;ex\u00e9g\u00e8se de la Bible, l&rsquo;exclusivit\u00e9 de la m\u00e9thode historico-critique s&rsquo;effrite et une place est faite \u00e0 nouveau au commentaire spirituel.
